Working with a Book Cover Designer

There was a small delay in writing this week's newsletter, since I just completed the canine "neat feet" program. For those who don't have hairy dogs, breeds like golden retrievers and Samoyeds have huge tufts of fur that grow out of the bottom of their feet.

At this time of year, all that footie fur collects sticky cottonwood seed pods and pine tree pitch. Obviously, walking around with forest junk attached to your feet is uncomfortable for the dogs, so they spend a lot of time chewing on their feet.

This afternoon, I decided it was time for some canine maintenance, so I got out the scissors. Although normally Cami is a bit of a pill about the neat feet routine, she had half a tree stuck in her paws, so even she was patient as I trimmed away.

This week's article has nothing to do with fur, forests, or feet, but it's based on a question I've received many times: how do I work with a cover designer?

Unleash Your Writing Voice

This week, we have been doing things related to the end of the Self-Publishers Online Conference. I've sent out many emails and am getting the artwork and audios together for the fulfillment house for those who purchased CDs.

If you were able to attend, you know it was an amazing 3-day publishing education. If you were there, I'd appreciate it if you could fill out our quick survey when you get a chance. We'd like to know what you thought, since we do plan to run the conference again next year.

In other news, on Friday I found out that my book Publishize: How to Quickly and Affordably Self-Publish a Book That Promotes Your Expertise won two Next Generation Indie Book Awards. It was a finalist in the How to category and the WINNER in the Writing and Publishing category. Yes, I am mighty pleased ;-)

Speaking of writing, that happens to the be the subject of this week's article.

Enjoy!

Use a Blog to Support (Not Replace) Your Site

This week, both James and I have been preparing for the Self-Publishers Online Conference (http://www.SelfPublishersOnlineConference.com/). By the time you read this, we will have already gone through the first day of speakers. I'm crossing my fingers that everything turns out okay. Today, we had a hailstorm and I can report that it's a wee bit stressful conducting a teleseminar when you think you might lose your Internet connection (at best) or your electricity at worst. It would be nice if the North Idaho spring weather would calm down a bit for the conference.

Speaking of stress, for many people, creating Web sites is the cause of quite a bit of stress. James has a few words of wisdom for those folks worrying about whether or not to create a blog.

Enjoy!

Use a Blog to Support Your Main Web Site, Not Replace It

Use a blog for its strengths; it should be an adjunct to a standard business Web site, not a substitute for one

SPOC: This Friday is “Platform Day”

SPOC, the Self Publishers Online Conference, takes place this week
and Friday, the final day of the conference, ends with a bang with
speakers Michael Port, Jill Lublin, Patrick Snow, Melanie Jordan
and Donna Kozik.

http://www.selfpublishersonlineconference.com/

When you register, you can see that you can choose from several
options. Attending live is free. If you want more goodies you can

(Please feel free to pass this link on to your friends, too!)

Friday is "Platform Day," which is geared to showing you how to
build a business around your book and develop a complete platform
of information products.

SPOC Platform Day: Friday, May 15 (All times are Pacific time)

9 AM - Bringing It All Together: Building Your Book into a Business
- Donna Kozik
As you write and publish your book, it's a good idea to keep the
big picture in mind, including how you will develop and expand on
the content later for workshops, speeches and info-products. In
this presentation Donna Kozik will share the systems and strategies
she uses when creating book content. With these ideas, you'll be
able to see how an entire business and line of products can be
built on the foundation of your book.

11 AM - Thinking Big - Michael Port
Most people operate from only a fraction of who they are and what
they are capable of. Why? Because it can be confronting to express
yourself boldly in the world--whether you're looking to communicate
it in person or in writing. The desire for bigness causes problems
for people. They don't know how to create it for themselves. They
don't think they are capable. They don't think it's possible for
them. Even those who are successful need support in thinking even
bigger because we are never thinking as big as we possibly can.
Michael Port, the leader of The Think Big Revolution and the guy to
call when you're tired of thinking small, has his audiences design
a Personal Manifesto for thinking bigger about who they are and
what they offer the world in an authentic, meaningful, and
prosperous way. During this presentation he will show how your book
is more than a book--it can become your whole empire, and the
elements to think about that will get you there.

1 PM - Guerrilla Publicity:  Connect With the Media for $50K in
Free Publicity - Jill Lublin
Let the media tell your story and bring clients right to your door.
Jill shares her proven publicity secrets for getting the attention
of national media, including The New York Times, CNN,
The Today Show, Good Morning America, and more--all based on
her international Bestseller, Guerrilla Publicity. Jill will explain
how you can get the media talking about your book, instantly
increase your visibility, competitive edge, and market share
and learn the 7 guerrilla tactics for mastering any interview
with magazines, newspapers, or TV!

3 PM - Build Your Information Empire - Patrick Snow
Bestselling author, publishing coach, and keynote speaker Patrick
Snow explains how you can turn your book into a lead generating
tool to expand your speaking, coaching and consulting business.
Patrick will discuss how you can get your book translated into
numerous foreign language at virtually zero out of pocket costs;
get featured in major newspapers and magazines; find out what
producers are looking for to get on TV and radio; set your speaking
fees; use your book to get into the field of coaching and build an
information empire from your book.

5 PM - Beyond The Book!  Achieve Maximum Audience And Revenue For
Your Knowledge - Melanie Jordan
Authors are great at creating books, and sometimes even think of
further monetizing their work as speakers, but the majority of
authors still tend to be all about their books. That author
mindset is a huge mistake, because the maximum possible audience
and revenue for any author's knowledge is achieved with an
infopreneur's (information entrepreneur's) mindset. In
this information-packed session, filled with actionable, case
study-rich material, 6-time self-published author, information
product and marketing expert Melanie Jordan shows you how to
think beyond the book and become an infopreneur by creating your
own original content information product and high-ticket
information service line, based on real-world business techniques
in product management and new product development.

3 PM - The Buck Starts Here - Brian Jud, Book Marketing Matters
More than half of all books sold every year are sold to
non-bookstore buyers. Discover creative ways to find and contact
buyers in airport stores, supermarkets, discount stores, book
clubs, catalogs, corporations, associations, schools and government
agencies. Find out the best ways to contact each, the appropriate
discounts and how to reach them via personal sales calls, telephone
sales and direct marketing. You can sell more books more profitably
in a shorter period of time.

5 PM - After the Launch - Will you Sink or Swim? Carol White & Debi
Flora
You have your books "in hand," and you've done your launch party.
You've sold a copy to all your friends and family, and you've got
your web presence. And maybe you've even sent out a press release
and done a Facebook page. But now, the truth sets in:  your book
isn't selling like you had hoped. Now what? This fact-filled,
entertaining session from two book pros will give you lots of ideas
to fill your "to do" list for the next several months as you

Here is a short run-down of next week's speakers for "Publishing
Day," Wednesday, May 13, a day dedicated to showing you how to
write and produce a finished book from your manuscript.

SPOC Publishing Day: Wednesday, May 13 (all times are Pacific time)

9 AM - Simultaneous Publishing: Confirming Subjects and Finding
Markets - Dan Poynter, Para Publishing
The most expensive parts of book publishing are the mistakes! Dan
Poynter explains "simultaneous publishing," which is a system for
researching your subject matter and drafting your marketing plan at
the same time. You will determine who your readers are, what your
buyers want to read, and where to find them. Find out about the
book researching and selling opportunities in forums, blogging,
ezines, podcasting and social groupings.

11 AM - How to Turn One Book into a Full-Time Living – Peter Bowerman
Landing a publisher has never been harder...and even when you do,
count on anemic royalty rates, 18 to 24 months to publication, and
giving up the rights to your book. And you'll still be expected to
do most of the marketing yourself! There's a better way. Join
nationally renowned copywriting and book marketing pro, Peter
Bowerman, for an engaging, info-packed session, where he'll share
the how-to of his self-publishing success and you'll learn how to
create a book that turns heads, find tons of eager reviewers, get
bookstores to look for you, build a 24/7 cash-generating web site,
generate multiple income streams, and much more. Don't miss it!

1 PM - It's Not About The Book:  Six Super Success Secrets -
Matthew Bennett
Matthew Bennett is a self-published author who has sold more than
5 million non-fiction books and is an expert at selling large
quantities of books to companies. Like most self-publishers,
Matthew started out by trying to sell books the traditional way.
But he grew frustrated with sales, distribution, and all the other
headaches of dealing with bookstores. He found a solution so he
could achieve his goals arranged it so charities also make money on
every sale. In fact, he has raised over $1 million for charity
largely through the book deals he's been able to put together.

3 PM - Green Tightwad Publishing - Susan Daffron & James Byrd,
Logical Expressions, Inc.
Nowhere is waste more extreme than in the book publishing industry.
Since its inception, Logical Expressions has taken a "green
tightwad" approach to self-publishing books, which avoids a lot of
the waste inherent in traditional book publishing. At Logical
Expressions, Daffron and Byrd use a combination of print on demand
and extremely low-cost online marketing methods to sell books. The
approach and methods are described in Susan's book Publishize: How
to Quickly and Affordably Self-Publish a Book That Promotes Your
Expertise. Logical Expressions' books make a profit from day one.

5 PM - Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Distributor -  Jacqueline Church
Simonds
Most self-publishers have dreams of seeing their book stocked in
bookstores. But that's not as easy as it first appears. One of the
most efficient ways of getting into bookstores is having a
national distributor. But is having a distributor always a good
thing? And since most don't accept self-publishers, how can little
ol' you attract their attention? What are the plusses and
minuses of having a distributor? And once you have one...well,
where are the care and feeding instructions? Jacqueline will cover
these topics and more.

Don’t Give Up

Today, I'm working on a lot of stuff for the Self-Publishers Online Conference, which is next week. I've been busily setting up pages for the Exhibit Hall, testing conference call providers, and telling other people about it. I'll be honest, I'm really tired and I've had a sinus headache all day. Bleh.

We all have bad days sometimes. Acknowledging that sometimes work and being in business can be difficult happens to be the subject of this week's article.

Enjoy!

Key to Success #10: Don't Give Up!

by Susan C. Daffron

Accept the fact that owning and operating a business will require work, and don't give up if it's what you really want
